Portable power with performance

Picoscope 3000 Series PC Oscilloscopes and Mixed Signal Scopes

PicoScope 3000 Series USB oscilloscopes are compact tools for electronics work that easily slip in a laptop bag or briefcase, so you can take high-performance equipment with you anywhere.  The range includes 2 or 4 analog channels as well as a built-in versatile function/arbitrary waveform generator (AWG). The MSO versions add 16 digital channels for debug purposes. All of them have a built-in function/AWG generator to give you test signals anywhere you needed them.

The two-channel versions covering  50/70/100/200MHz are PS 3203D, PS 3204D, PS 3205D and PS 3206D

The two-channel MSO versions cover  50/70/100/200MHz - PS 3203D MSO, PS 3204D MSO, PS 3205D MSO, and PS 3206D MSO

The four-channel versions covering  50/70/100/200MHz are PS 3403D, PS 3404D, PS 3405D and PS 3406D

The four-channel versions covering  50/70/100/200MHz are PS 3403D, PS 3404D, PS 3405D and PS 3406D

 Key performance specs:

  • Up to 200MHz analog bandwidth
  • Up to 1 GSa/s real-time sampling rate
  • Up to 512MSa buffer memory
  • 100,000 waveforms per second
  • 16-channel logic analyzer (MSO models only)
  • Arbitrary waveform generator (AWG)
  • USB3.0 connection and power (no need for external power supply!)
  • Serial decoding and mask-testing comes standard
  • Windows, Linux and Mac software

Supplied with FREE sophisticated but easy-to-use PicoScope 6 software, the Pico 3000 Series oscilloscopes provide a cost-effective tool for a host of applications: embedded systems design, research, test, education, service, and repair.

Large bandwidth and fast sampling rate PicoScope 3000 Series Large bandwidth and fast sampling rate

Despite their compact size and affordability, their performance and bandwidth specs have not been compromised.  Up to 200MHz bandwidth is accomplished with real-time sampling rates of up to 1 GSa/s.  For repetitive signals, Equivalent Time Sampling (ETS) mode brings the maximum effective sampling rate up to an amazing 10GSa/s.

Many other scopes have fast sampling rates, but this is of limited benefit unless matched with deep memory. The PicoScope 3000 Series provides memory depths of up to 512 million samples, more than any other oscilloscope in its price range.  This means that the PicoScope 3406D MSO, for instance, can sample at 1 GSa/s right down to 50ms/div (500ms total capture time).

Coping with all this data calls for some powerful built-in tools: for instance, zoom buttons are included, with an overview window that lets you zoom and reposition the display just by dragging the mouse or touchscreen. In this way, zoom factors of several million are possible.  Other features such as the waveform buffer, mask limit testing, serial decode (no extra charge!) and hardware acceleration work in harmony with deep memory to make the PicoScope 3000 series some of the most powerful oscilloscopes available!

Serial bus decoding and protocol analysis

CANBus analysis in PicoScope PicoScope can decode 1-Wire, ARINC 429, CAN, DCC, DMX512, Ethernet 10Base-T and 100Base-TX,  FlexRay, I²C, I²S, LIN, PS/2, SENT, SPI,UART (RS-232 / RS-422 / RS-485), and USB protocol data – all included as standard with Picoscope software.  This costs extra for most benchtop scopes!  Even more protocols are in development, and they will be available in the future with free-of-charge software upgrades.

In graph format shows decoded data (hex, binary, decimal or ASCII) in a data bus timing format, under the waveform on a common time axis, with error frames marked in red. These frames can be zoomed in on for noise investigation or signal integrity issues.

In table format shows a list of the decoded frames, including the data and all flags and identifiers.  Set filtering conditions to display only the frames you are interested in; search for frames with specific properties. The Statistics function shows even more detail about the physical layer, such as frame times and voltage levels. The PicoScope software can also import a spreadsheet for decoding the data into user-defined text strings.

Arbitrary Waveform / Function / Sweep Generator

PicoScope 3000 Arbitrary waveform and function GeneratorAll PicoScope 3000D scopes have a built-in function generator signals (sine, square, triangle, DC level, white noise, PRBS, etc.) available via the front panel. For PicoScope 3000D MSO models the connector is on the rear panel.

As well as basic controls to set level, offset, and frequency, more advanced controls allow you to sweep over a range of frequencies. Combined with the spectrum peak hold option this forms a really powerful tool for testing amplifier and filter responses.

Trigger tools allow one or more cycles of a waveform to be output when various criteria are met - such as the scope triggering or a mask limit test failing.

A 14-bit 80 MSa/s arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) is also part of this internal signal source. AWG waveforms can be created or edited using the built-in AWG editor, imported from oscilloscope traces, or loaded from a spreadsheet.

FFT Spectrum Analysis

Spectrum View plots amplitude against frequency and is great for finding noise, crosstalk, or distortion in amplifier outputs or other signals. The spectrum analyzer in PicoScope is a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) math calculation which, in contrast with a traditional swept spectrum analyzer, can even display the spectrum of a single, non-repeating waveform.

A full range of settings gives you control over the number of spectrum bands (FFT bins), window types, scaling (including log/log) and display modes (instantaneous, average, or peak-hold).

You can display multiple spectrum views alongside oscilloscope views of the same signal. A comprehensive set of automatic frequency-domain measurements can be added to the display, including THD, THD+N, SNR, SINAD and IMD.  Mask limit tests can be applied to a spectrum - or use the AWG and spectrum mode together to turn the device into a sophisticated Swept Scalar Network Analyzer.

Signal integrity

Oscilloscope front end shieldingMost scopes are built to a price but PicoScopes are built up to a specification.  Careful front-end design and shielding reduces noise, crosstalk, and harmonic distortion.  Pico Technology’s many years of oscilloscope design experience can be seen in the remarkable bandwidth flatness and low distortion. The dynamic performance of Pico Technology’s products is published in detail (unlike most other oscilloscope manufacturers). The end result is that, when you test a circuit with a Picoscope, you can trust in the waveform seen on the screen.

USB connectivity

USB 3.0 PC OscilloscopeThe USB3.0 connection not only allows high-speed data acquisition and transfer, but also speeds up printing, copying, saving, and emailing data from the field.  With a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 connection, the already-optimized process of data transfer and waveform update rates become even faster.  Additional benefits of a USB 3.0 connection include faster saving of waveforms and faster gap-free continuous data streaming of up to 125MSa/s when using the SDK (software development kit). And the scope is still backward-compatible with older USB systems.  Also -  powering the unit from the USB port eliminates the need to carry a bulky external power supply, making it even more portable for the traveling engineer. You need this!
