 Since
I last wrote to you, we've found lots of exciting, new products
- some (frustratingly!) are not yet released for sale, so watch for
our next newsletter for those.
British Airways
held a competition last year called "Face-to-Face", and
Saelig was one of 100 winners of a fantastic prize: 10 business class
tickets to anywhere BA flies. The idea is to boost face-to-face
meetings, and promote international commerce.
I just got back from my first trip, visiting the EmbeddedWorld show
in Nuremburg, and CeBIT
in Hanover. I then spent another week visiting 10 of our UK suppliers, to
catch up on news and upcoming products. Highlights were in the
serendipitous conversations and bonding that occurred while discussing
(and eating) together.
At EmbeddedWorld I
met with staff from TOPSCCC,
SystemBase,
Byte Paradigm,
Adeunis,
and Janz
staff. Adeunis
highlighted their long-range ARF54 wireless product, and announced design
wins for their ARF73. At CeBIT,
I met with Seintek
staff as well as several new potential suppliers of unique
products. In the UK during a very busy week, I visited Sensor Technology
(Torque Sensors), CalibreUK
(video image scalers), MQP
(USB bus analyzers), Hunt
Engineering (ready-to-go FPGA/DSP boards), Thurlby-Thandar (test
& measurement instruments), Pico
Technology (PC scope adapters), EAD (antennas), Amplicon (custom
PCs and data comms), Scarecrow
(bird nuisance dispersal), and Elan Digital Systems
(miniature PC scope adapters and USB host ICs).

Rugged Puck Antennas for
Indoor/Outdoor Wireless Use
|
|
 Tough new CP antennas are based on
a common rubberized low-profile "puck" design with a built-in
central threaded mount. They offer 2-3 dBi gain for linearly polarized
signals and are ground-plane independent. Compact (102 x 33.5mm) CP
antennas are 1/2 wave radiating elements have a power rating 10W
and are supplied with 1 - 3m of cable terminated with an SMA male
connector. The cable exits on the underside of the antenna and,
once mounted, is totally enclosed, secure, and waterproof. CPW is a 2.4/5
GHz high gain puck antenna, while CPT is a cellular version and CPO is a GSM

10MHz Scope Adapter Offers Signal Isolation

USBscope50
is possibly the world's smallest USB Digital Storage Oscilloscope. USBscope50
combines a very small form factor - similar to a memory stick - with the
high performance normally associated with much larger bench-type products.
Powered from a USB port, USBscope50's
modular design allows the user to configure a single channel or up to 4
channels when using multiple adapters. A proprietary
synchronization system insures tight signal channel-to-channel matching
and concurrent triggering. USBscope50
is small enough to be carried in a shirt pocket or laptop bag and uses
standard BNC oscilloscope probes.
USBscope50 offers
lots of features common on bench scopes, such as AC/DC coupling,
programmable trigger threshold and edge modes, pre- and post-trigger,
programmable input offset, 50MSps 8-bit sampling (1GS/s equivalent time
sampling for repetitive input waveforms), 3V/30V/300V input ranges with
a x10 scope probe - but adds features sometimes
unavailable in even expensive scopes, such as 300V Cat II galvanic input
isolation between BNC ground and USB ground. This means that there is no
DC path through USBscope50
from the scope ground clip to the PC's

Adapter Makes Cellphones/PDAs Compatible with USB Memory Devices
|

Mobidapter
is a USB memory stick reader which plugs directly into the SD memory slot
on mobile/cell phones, smart phones and PDAs, permitting - for the first
time - reliable, rapid transfer of files from USB sources. Just
insert Mobidapter
to a phone's SD slot, connect it to a USB memory device, and - in an
instant - text files, images, PowerPoint files, can be e-mailed.
Now files can be transferred anywhere - without a PC - in all operating
systems since no drivers are required.
USB memory sticks have become the de facto way to carry and transfer
data, but until now it has been impossible to connect them to most mobile
phones and PDAs. Mobidapter
works with any make of mobile/cell phone, SmartPhone or
PDA that features an external SD slot. It can also be used with
mini-SD slots using a simple adapter. Both SD and SDHC hosts are
supported. In effect, Mobidapter
becomes a standard USB host connector, interfacing with
USB memory devices to a maximum 32GB.
Mobidapter
can also be used with many other devices, such as TV's, PDA's, GPS devices
and Digital Picture Frames. It is now possible to transfer data such as
pictures, MP3 files, Microsoft Office applications, or any type of file
from a standard USB memory stick to and from a mobile device. Last
minute data sent from head office while you are in the field - but no
Internet access? No problem! Download it via your cellphone
to a memory stick - and hence your laptop - using Mobidapter.

features for Low-cost Owon Oscilloscope
|
PDS5022S - our low-cost, full-featured
25MHz two-channel benchtop oscilloscope - now offers new features
normally found on much more expensive instruments, with no increase in
its remarkably low cost.
- Autoscale can be set
to automatically adjust the vertical gain, or the horizontal time
base, or both together. This is useful for circuit probing --
as the probe is moved from point to point on a circuit board, the
display auto-adjusts for best trace presentation. It
functions in the same manner as 'AutoSet', but instead of being a
one-time function, it's active until turned off, keeping the hands
free.
- FFT allows you
to instantly see the frequency spectrum of the signal under test.

This compact 2" x 1" circuit board implements a bus-powered
Hi-speed USB 2.0 endpoint terminating in a single 80-pin target interface
connector. With the companion QuickUSB
Customizer™ software, you can tailor the QuickUSB Module
to give your product a custom-developed look and feel with a user-defined
'My Product' string descriptor, a unique PID (Product ID), and a
user-defined serial number to create uniquely identifiable products.
Today, most any products that connect to a PC have a Hi-Speed
USB 2.0 connection, and a number of generic solutions are available. But
when you finally have your USB interface working, USB devices
must be assigned product ID (PID) and a vendor ID (VID)
- VIDs are assigned by the USB Implementers Forum at ~ $2,000.
None of these generic solutions allows you to easily make a product that
enumerates on a PC with your company and product identification.
