November
was a very busy month for us and I have several notable happenings to
tell you about including our recent corporate move and my trip to electronica 2012!
We are still settling in
at our new, larger headquarters at 71 Perinton Parkway in Fairport, NY.
We are making good use of a much larger warehouse which will allow
us to purchase and stock your favorite products in even greater
quantities. We are also in the process of configuring a new studio
to enhance our video and still photography capabilities.
In mid-November,
I traveled to Munich, Germany in search of new products to
introduce to our customers, and also to meet with many of our overseas
suppliers. The Germans really know how to do shows - electronica
attracts exhibitors (about 2,700) and visitors (about 75,000) from all over
the world! With 10 exhibition halls, it takes 2 -3 days and a
decent pair of shoes to complete the trek. This months'
e-newsletter highlights some of the interesting booths that I visited and
includes just some of the new products I found.

Pico
Technology
|
|
Pico Technology introduced a new range of
economical mixed-signal oscilloscopes (MSOs) that combine deep memory
and high performance with a powerful 16-channel logic analyzer. With a
built-in function generator and arbitrary waveform generator also
included, these oscilloscopes form a complete test bench in one
compact, USB-powered device. The new two-channel MSOs offer bandwidths
from 60 MHz to 200 MHz, and a maximum single-channel sampling rate of
500 MS/s, and 100 MHz digital inputs. Buffer memory sizes range from 8
MSa to 128 MSa. "The deep memory on these MSOs works especially
well with the serial decoding feature," explained Managing
Director Alan Tong. "You can capture serial data using any of the
2 analog and 16 digital inputs, giving you up to 18 channels. All of these
can be decoded concurrently, even if you have a mixture of serial
protocols." Videos are becoming increasingly important as
showcases of technology (especially if reduced to "bite-size"
2 minute teasers) and Pico has come up with some useful introductory
oscilloscope videos at www.picoscope.tv. More ...

ABI Electronics
|
|

ABI Electronics is a British
company which has some remarkable PCB repair instruments. Biggest sellers
are their System 8 range of PCB board
testers aimed at electronics repair facilities. This system of
mix-and-match CD-drive-sized modules with analog, digital, JTAG, etc.
capabilities can be combined to build a specific combo setup for
individual needs, driven by ABI's automated "Test Flow"
software. Columbian Metro Railway has 100 systems, for their
electronics service departments, for instance. A subset of these
System 8 modules with a built-in display is available in the form of an
Active Oscilloscope, which has a built-in signal generator for driving
PCB connections and IC pins. Another very interesting product is RevEng:
this allows users to reverse-engineer a PCB by attaching clip
connectors to board components to create a net-list, allowing you to
reproduce the layout from resultant Gerber plots. More ...

Mastech
|
|
Mastech, one of the
world's largest instrument manufacturers and a leading provider of
electronic measuring instruments, exhibited an outstanding
range of digital multimeters. I
told their staff that we at Saelig had evaluated a number of DMM
suppliers and found Mastech quality to be superior, and so we have
selected them as our most recent product line addition. A sampling
of their products are now featured on our website. More...

GL-Optic
|
I
found a really unique product at the GL Optic booth - a compact precision standalone spectrophotometer system, about the size of a
thick smartphone, for measuring color temperature of LEDs and OLEDs.
Optional fiber-optic accessories are available for display
characterizing, as well as large integrating spheres for total light
output measurement of LED and other lamps. Another very interesting
product exhibited was the GL OPTI LIGHT LED, a light box that can simulate any
color temperature source. More ...

Tabor Electronics
|
|

Tabor Electronics was showing their high-end RF
signal generators and RF amplifiers with specs that beat the well-known
brands at lower cost. A new Tabor video describes the company's value-priced
products.

JanzTec
|
|

I had lunch with Arnulf Lockmann from JanzTec
- who traveled from Paderborn to meet with me. He explained their
recent company name-change from Janz Automation Systems to JanzTec, which
was based on the need to broaden their appeal to non-automation customers
(e.g. special vehicle manufacturers, Fiat trams, feed mixing trucks,
etc.). Saelig offers the full JanzTec line. More ...

Aim-TTi
|
|
Aim-TTi's booth received a
lot of attention with their unique current-sensing iProber scope
probes which can sense current flowing in PCB tracks without breaking
them or surrounding them with a sense coil. This hot-selling
probe is just one of thousands of stocked items in our NY warehouse,
ready for same-day shipment. More ...

ProAnt
|
|

Swedish antenna supplier ProAnt was highlighting yet
another unique product - miniature metal antennas (better than track
antennas) available on tape-and-reel. They offer a finished-product
wireless evaluation of your
product in their new 6GHz anechoic chamber. More ...

Plessey
|
|

Plessey created some exciting buzz with a
consumer product that features their ECG-sensing ICs that needs no messy
conductive gel. imPulse™ is
a small game-controller-style device with two places for thumb-prints
which sends your ECG to a nearby cellphone for transmitting on to a
physician. imPulse™
is a personal handheld ECG Touch Monitor that is aimed at the home health
market, and will allow the routine, quick and accurate recording of ECG
signals outside of the medical environment - without the need for
conductive gel or skin preparation. More ...

DCTB
|
|
A surprising booth I stopped at was an evangelistic one:
DCTB - German Christian Technical Association. Their
booth featured a 3-D maze challenge and they were handing out
thought-provoking booklets to challenge engineers about why we are all
here. Maybe electronics isn't all there is in life.

In
other supplier news:
|
|
Saelig has announced
distribution agreements with Telemakus and Redfish Instruments.
Telemakus produces a range of
versatile USB thumbdrive-sized RF modules. The TelemakusUSB range
of USB-controlled RF products allow any Windows PC and a USB hub to
control a complex system of custom RF functions that include switches,
attenuators, amplifiers, signal generators, vector modulators, phase
shifters, frequency doublers, and power detectors. It is now easy
and economical to combine these TelemakusUSB modules together to
assemble a custom, reconfigurable and extremely portable RF test system,
creating the features of expensive benchtop systems (such as network
analyzers, and synthesized signal generators) at a fraction of their
cost. A configuration might, for instance, consist of a signal
generator, a step attenuator or driver amplifier to control signal output
power, all driving a device under test, and measuring the DUT output with
a wideband power sensor.
Redfish Instruments makes the iDVM
- a world-first digital voltmeter that transmits readings wirelessly to a
nearby cellphone or tablet, with a friendly "real-meter"
interface. The world`s first iPhone-enabled multimeter that
wirelessly connects to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, allowing users to
easily acquire, visualize, and share electrical measurements. The iDVM
app, with the familiar appearance of a standard digital voltmeter, can be
downloaded free from the Apple App Store. iDVM
allows a user to log data over an extended period of time using an iPhone
or iPad as an electrically isolated storage device. Service engineers
could use the iDVM to collect data and store it in a report for
submission to clients, or retain the data on the voltmeter for their own
records. Using the GeoTag feature of the iPhone or iPad, engineers can
even identify their location as part of the data.
