March 2014

From the Desk of Alan Lowne, CEO

Dear Colleague,

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to read our Saelig email. I promise to try to make each one valuable to you!

Here in the Northeast USA we have had frigid temperatures and quite an accumulation of snow; so we are eager for spring to arrive!

I hope you took notice of our special offer in February - we sent out a mid-month email notifying our customers about a large batch of Owon oscilloscopes that we had specially obtained so we could offer a huge bargain exclusively to our readers. We sold the entire inventory in a single day and had to repeat the offer two days later! I'm curious to find out if you heard about it and where first - Our Facebook page? Our Tweets? My blog? Or the special email?

Below are more items that I hope you find beneficial!

Sincerely,

Saelig Company, Inc.

New Rigol Oscilloscope Line Available from Saelig!

DS2000A SeriesIn addition to the hugely popular 1000-Z range of oscilloscopes, Rigol has authorized Saelig to market their new 2000A series. The DS2000A Series digital oscilloscope is another best-in-class instrument offering an unmatched feature/value package. The DS2000A is a fast and versatile scope covering frequencies up to 300 MHz with two channels and a wide vertical range (500uV/div-10V/div) to deliver an extremely low noise floor to help you capture smaller signals. With a 2 GSa/s sample rate and 14 Mpts of standard memory, a user-friendly interface and a beautiful 8" WVGA display, this is a scope that outperforms the competition in a wide range of bench-top and field applications - and at a 35% cost saving over the equivalent models from the two market leaders!  More...

EasyLog GFX Dataloggers

EL-GFX-1

Lascar's new EasyLog GFX dataloggers are now on our website, offering USB ambient data logging with real-time data analysis and display. With built-in dot-matrix displays, the EL-GFX range provides users with more real-time information on the data being recorded than any comparable data logger range on the market. The range includes a temperature data logger, a temperature and humidity data logger, and a dual-channel thermocouple data logger. Glycol probes are also available to provide a buffered response to changes in temperature.  More...

New Compact 8-Ch USB3.0 Oscilloscope

PS4824

The new PicoScope 4824 is an 8-channel 12-bit resolution PC scope adapter with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface and an integrated 14-bit arbitrary waveform generator.  This new multi-channel scope has the same small footprint as previous two- and four-channel models, and can replace cumbersome full-sized workbench scopes. Like all PicoScopes, the 4824 is small, light, and highly portable.  Despite its high specification, it is entirely powered via USB and does not require a bulky separate adapter. With a maximum sampling rate of 80MSa/s, a deep buffer memory of 256MSa and data streaming capabilities, this scope can perform detailed, useful signal capture over prolonged periods.    More...

WiFi-connected Data Loggers

EL-WiFi-TH

Lascar has WiFi-connected data loggers for situations where you need to log a site-wide environment. Temperature (WiFi-TP), temperature/humidity (WiFi-TH), and external temperature probe (WiFi-TC) versions are also available, with built-in LCD readout. More ...

Easy Frequency Response Analysis With CleverScope

CS328

Now you can use the Cleverscope CS328A-FRA to quickly measure the impedance and phase of feedback networks, transformers, PCB power planes, capacitors, resistors and inductors - without needing any major setting up. The FRA Control Panel software makes it easy to set up everything in one place - you do not need to know how to use the rest of the Cleverscope system - and you can also measure capacitance, inductance, effective series resistance, dissipation factor and the quality factor of components!

FRA Set UPHere is a typical setup for testing an inductor. Using the FRA control panel you can fully evaluate a transformer's transfer response, the primary and secondary inductances, the leakage inductance and inter-winding capacitance, all over frequency. Using DC offset you can check saturation and DC sensitivity. You don't need to buy an expensive network analyzer because the Cleverscope FRA does all this for you over a 0-65MHz* frequency range!

Inductance Image

And here is the inductance - effective series resistance plot for the inductor shown above.

Dataman S6 now supports 14,000 devices!

Dataman S6A new database has just been posted on Dataman's website for their Dataman S6 Programmer.  This USB-powered universal 48-pin chip programmer with compact dimensions and minimal weight can program without the need for a family-specific module, giving you the freedom to choose the optimal device for your design. The S6 is built to meet the demands of development labs and field engineers for universal programming.  More...

Flexible Resolution Oscilloscopes win DesignVision Award!

PS5000The PicoScope 5000 Series of Flexible Resolution Oscilloscopes recently won the coveted DesignVision 2014 award for Test and Measurement Equipment at the DesignCon 2014 show. The award was presented by UBM Tech Electronics, publisher EDN, EE Times and Planet Analog.

The PicoScope 5000 Series scopes are the only oscilloscopes to provide selectable hardware resolution from 8 to 16 bits in a single device while maintaining low noise and distortion. They achieve this by using a novel digitizer architecture in which multiple high-resolution ADCs are sequenced in a variety of series and parallel combinations. This great performance, combined with the advanced features of the PicoScope 6 software, means that the PicoScope 5000 Series is the only general-purpose oscilloscope that you need on your workbench. With 2 and 4 channel models, a maximum sampling rate of 1 GSa/s, 60 to 200 MHz bandwidth options, arbitrary waveform generator, up to 512 MSa buffer memory, advanced triggers including pulse width, dropout, window, runt pulse, logic and delayed, math channels, spectrum analyzer, serial decoding of SPI, I2C, I2S, UART/RS-232, CAN, LIN, FlexRay - the feature list goes on and on!  More ...

Oscilloscope Evaluation Article

Are you in the market for a new oscilloscope? We have a great selection of devices for sale, but which should you choose? It's clear that "scope bandwidth" and "sample rate" are two important parameters, but are there other things hidden in the specification sheets you should take a look at? Check out Circuit Cellar's articles by Colin O'Flynn on "Evaluating Oscilloscopes"  (Part 1)   (Part 2)   (Part 3)

Keeping Obsolete Equipment Running

COTS JournalThis month, COTS Journal published an article I wrote on keeping obsolete equipment running.

Kudos

"Now that I am aware what great folks you are, I'll be doing business with you any time I need additional equipment or more toys." Dr. M.M.

"A note about your advertising... I think you are spot-on with your advertising in trade magazines and Circuit Cellar. The main reason I read trade magazines are for ads such as yours - the trade mags are great for letting the rest of us know who is doing what." J.A.
