June 2014

From the Desk of Alan Lowne, CEO

Dear Colleague,

It's very nearly June and you may already be thinking of taking a summer break!  Memories of last season's seemingly endless snowfall have finally turned to thoughts of the beach and the smell of sunblock!  Our spring lasted about four days and now the trees have bloomed and flowers are profuse... as are the new products and news at Saelig, so take a look below.

Sincerely,

High-Speed, High-Capacity Programmable DC Electronic Load Series

The PEL-3000 Series of single-channel programmable DC electronic loads from GWInstek offer high-speed slope and high power capacity to meet SPS (SMPS), DC - DC power converter, Hybrid Electric Vehicle and other battery testing needs. With 0.01mA current resolution and 16A/us current slew rate, power supply characteristic tests can be performed with accuracy, stability, speed, and over a wide power range. The PEL-3000 Series Electronic Loads operate from 1.5V to 150V and have seven operational modes: CV (constant voltage), CC (constant current), CR (constant resistance), CP (constant power), CC + CV, CR + CV and CP + CV. In the CC and CR mode, this versatile test tool can simulate a variety of sequenced dynamic load characteristics, with specified load currents, up/down slopes, current levels, durations, and other parameters to suit any load tests needed.  In Constant Current Mode the load units will sink the amount of current programmed; regardless of the voltage, the current will stay the same. In Constant Resistance Mode, set as resistance conductance, the unit will maintain a constant resistive load by varying the current. In Constant Voltage Mode, the unit will maintain a preset fixed voltage level.  In Constant Power Mode, the unit will maintain a constant power level by varying the current.  Via sequence editing, arbitrary test output waveforms from the memory function can be set from the front panel without connecting with a computer.  Saelig More Info Button

Independent reviews of Pico PS6403D and PS2205A Oscilloscopes

PS6403D

PicoScope 6403D

Electronics blogger Colin O'Flynn has posted a detailed review of the recently-released PicoScope 6403D, with links to even more detailed information on his YouTube channel. The scope belongs to the PicoScope 6000 Series, a range of four-channel USB oscilloscopes with bandwidths from 250 to 500 MHz, 5 GS/s sampling, built-in arbitrary waveform generator and USB 3.0 interface.

Here are some of the features covered:

  • Equivalent-time sampling (ETS) mode - how to improve timing resolution to as little as 20 ps
  • How to evaluate the frequency response of your scope
  • Advanced triggering - including pulse width triggers and the buffer overview; extremely long but accurate trigger delays
  • Serial decoding with overlay of analog and digital data
  • Arbitrary waveform generator
  • Using the SDK - with an experimental Python interface
  • Comparison with competing scopes PicoScope 6000 Series

PicoScope 2205A
PS2200A Series

A new independent review of the PicoScope 2205A by the RoadTest Group scored it 10/10 in all six categories: performance, specifications, software quality, ease of use, support materials and price! This very detailed review answers questions about the scope, including: understanding the specifications, comparison with other manufacturers, teardown, PicoScope software, data logging with PicoLog and tests in time and frequency domains. Read "PicoScope 2205A Review" by Gough Lui.

Versatile USB-I2CI/O Board for Easy Access to I2C Peripherals

USB-I2CI/O

Ideal for integrating into equipment with your existing or planned application software (e.g. manufacturing test set-ups) where you know that only your own software will suit your needs and you must have a reliable interface board. USB-I2CIO provides long-life hardware, a simple API, and rock solid firmware, dll, and driver (this is where most other I2C boards fall down).  All for a very reasonable price, with custom support available too.  This board is used by manufacturers around the world. Lab Equipment for Universities and Schools

Now is the time of year that university lab managers are planning to upgrade and increase their equipment and capabilities.  Here are some of the products that we support and make available to schools, colleges, and universities, but may be of interest to all our colleagues too:

Best Priced Oscilloscopes from Rigol, Owon and GW Instek. We have an extremely broad scope selection from manufacturers all over the world - from low-end scope-in-a-probe devices, to 6 instruments-in-1 toolbox essentials, to high-end 16-bit 12GHz TDR units; from standalone, economical LCD scopes, to sophisticated 4-channel bench-top 'workhorses'; educational starter scopes that include teaching experiments, to high-end mixed signal scopes with logic analysis capabilities for sophisticated glitch triggering and deep memory depth searching for rare events. Our Syscomp Educational Oscilloscopes also have associated training materials.

Signal Generators - We offer a unique selection of high-quality signal generators to suit almost any budget, from low-cost bench signal sources from Aim-TTi and Syscomp to Arbitrary Waveform Generators from Rigol, Owon, Pico, Taborand GWInstek.

RF Test - We sell 3/6GHz Spectrum Analyzers with tracking generators, 3GHz handheld spectrum analyzers, RF signal sources and signal quality analyzers, USB RF test modules, as well as EMI-proof enclosures. We also offer a special educational RF Trainer Bundle.

Power Supplies -  Everyone needs power supplies! We offer a wide choice of simple "wall-wart" supplies for low-voltage/low-current needs, and more complex benchtop supplies with single or multiple outputs, programmable supplies and flexible current/voltage supplies with multiple communication options with output up to 800W.

Multimeters - Economical handheld meters, DVMs with USB-connectivity, bench-top 4 ½ and 5 ½ digit LAN capabilities.

Troubleshooting on the Move

Today's engineers and technicians face increasingly complex and critical troubleshooting tasks. Designs that work fine in the lab can sometimes fail in the field, causing customer dissatisfaction, lost production, expensive repair bills and, sometimes, safety concerns. With the customer impatient to get their system fixed as rapidly as possible there is huge pressure to troubleshoot and fix problems quickly and accurately. A new article on EE Times Europe's Design Center explains how you can use PicoScope 2200A and 5000 Series oscilloscopes to debug some common field-failure problems.

Question Mark ImageThis month marks 50 years since the invention of BASIC, the simplified programming language that made computing accessible to everyone. In 1964, John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz designed the original BASIC language at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. "People who absolutely never would have engaged with the computer before were now engaging with computers on campus," Dan Rockmore, a Dartmouth mathematics and computer science professor, told NPR in a recent interview. Rockmore also recalled his first encounter with BASIC as a high school student: "I'm almost sure that I wrote a program to play poker."
