Saelig Unveils New Low-EMI 1.8V Oscillators For Low Cost EMI Reduction

Fairport, NY, USA:  Saelig Company, Inc. (www.saelig.com) has introduced another oscillator to the Euroquartz range of Spread Spectrum low-EMI oscillators that uses spread spectrum (dithered) techniques to reduce electromagnetic interference by up to 15dB. The new 18HM series oscillators have a supply voltage of 1.8V and available in three standard surface mount package sizes: 3.2 x 2.5mm, 5 x 3.2mm and 7 x 5mm. The oscillators are drop-in replacements for standard clocks. The low-cost oscillators offer the significant advantage of reducing EMI at source, i.e. the system clock oscillator, so that there is no need to employ costly shielded backplanes, ferrite cores and similar techniques to reduce EMI.

Euroquartz’ 18HM series low-EMI oscillators are available with a choice of modulation rates and spread type. A spread spectrum oscillator disperses the mode energy over a wide bandwidth. This is achieved by the frequency modulation technique which may be applied to the down side of the nominal frequency (known as down spread) or spread equally either side of nominal (centre spread). The majority of applications use centre spread although down spread is the preferred technique if overclocking is a concern.

In most electronic systems, the principal cause of EMI is the system clock, so making reductions at the source rather than patch-up fixes (e.g. ferrite beads, ground planes, metal shielding or costly additions) makes a lot of sense. Spread spectrum technology moves the center-point energy over a wider bandwidth and, since the low frequency spread technique is in the kHz region, the process is transparent to the oscillator’s primary operating frequency.

Common specifications for the new 18HM oscillators are frequency range from 12.5 to 42.0MHz, CMOS output logic, DC input voltage of 1.8V ±0.15V, frequency stability options of ±25ppm, ±50ppm and ±100ppm for commercial (0 to +70°C) and industrial (-40 to +85°C) devices, rise/fall times of 2.5ns maximum, 15pF load and start-up time 2ms typical. Duty cycle is 50% ±10%, standard, cycle to cycle jitter is ±100ps maximum and ageing is ±5ppm/year maximum at 25°C.  Supplied on EIA 16mm tape and reel in quantities of 1000, the new 18HM series low EMI, low voltage oscillators are RoHS compliant and lead-free. The devices are reflow solder compatible and can withstand two processes at 260°C for 10 seconds maximum.

18HM series oscillators are RoHS compliant and are ideal for a wide range of equipment, including printers and multi-function devices, digital copiers, networking, LAN/WAN, routers, computer storage systems (CD-ROM, VCD, DVD, HDD), scanners, modems, projectors, embedded systems, musical instruments, automotive electronics, GPS car navigation systems, PC monitors and TVs, ADSL, PCMCIA equipment, digital cameras, and medical devices.

Made by European frequency product specialists Euroquartz, 18HM series oscillators are available now from Saelig Company. Inc.
