Saelig Introduces Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon MAGIC dotLEDs
For The Wearables Market

Standard semiconductor manufacturing processing yields miniscule low cost, wearable LEDs

Fairport, NY: Saelig Company, Inc. ( has announced the availability of dotLED products for the wearables market. Plessey smallest packaged MaGIC™ LED is manufactured using their patented GaN-on-Si technology and is aimed at the rapidly growing wearable electronics market. The PLW138003 is a white LED in a 1005 SMT package designed to address the need for ever smaller LED components producing highly collimated light. The 1005-size of the PLW138003 (1.0mm x 0.5mm) is a standard low-profile electronic component size, handled by the common surface-mount machines used in high volume consumer electronics. Plessey's dotLEDs weigh only 0.2mg with a profile of 0.2mm and represent an industry-leading option for any wearable application needing LED content.

The PLW138003 delivers up to 0.7Lm of white light with a 130deg viewing angle from a 5mA drive current. A blue version, the PLB138003 is also available. For customers needing a further breakthrough in size, the PLB030003 blue LED ultra-thin die is also available at just 200um x 200um x 75um.

Plessey's LEDs are produced using its proprietary MaGIC technology. Using standard semiconductor manufacturing processing provides significant cost advantages over ordinary, more expensive LEDs of similar quality which are based on Sapphire or Silicon Carbide technology. MAGIC dotLEDs are built using a thin 2.5um Gallium Nitride (GaN) layer on a 6-inch silicon substrate, delivering industry-standard performance at a dramatically reduced manufacturing cost.  By using standard silicon semiconductor production techniques, Plessey is able to economically produce high-volume, high-quality industry standard LEDs for the consumer electronics market. MaGIC dotLED  GaN-on-Silicon LEDs are the first commercially available solid state illuminators manufactured on 6” GaN-on-Silicon substrates.  With production yields of greater than 95% and fast processing times, a significant cost advantage can be offered over Sapphire- and Silicon Carbide-based LED solutions for a wide range of industry-standard solid-state illumination and indicator applications.
