Fairport, NY: Saelig Company, Inc. has introduced the Sciospec Medical Research ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer, which is intended to facilitate the use of impedance spectroscopy in medical research applications. With Sciospec’s class-leading ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer as its basis, the Medical Research ISX-3 is equipped with enhanced electrical safety considerations in accordance with DIN EN 60601-1:2013, including medical grade isolation, enabling safe operation of the instrument in medical research settings. Isolation applies to both the power supply as well as the operator interfaces on the measurement ports (equivalent to "patient" interface connections). Sciospec’s IF frontend with 4-port BNC interface supports simple 2-point measurements, as well as 3- and 4-electrode configurations. With an available frequency range from 100mHz to 10MHz (extendable to 40 or 100MHz) the Medical Research ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer covers an impedance dynamic range measurement of 300dB (mOhm to TOhm) with a precision of 0.01%.
The Sciospec Medical Research ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer is designed to inject an electrical excitation stimulus (applied voltage or injected current) and then measure the response of the object being tested, both the voltage drop across the object and the current flow through the object, to derive the complex impedance value. The excitation stimulus is applied as a sinusoidal signal with varying frequency and/or amplitude.
The Medical Research ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer is not a medical product and as such its intended purpose does not include diagnosis and/or treatment of patients; but for purposes of biological research it includes added safety measures in accordance with DIN EN 60601-1:2013-12 "Medical electrical equipment – Part 1: General requirements for basic safety and essential performance". These measures assist research applications requiring exemptions for experiments on patients which require the prevention of contact between electrical circuitry and external equipment or humans, shielding of measurement front-end circuitry (noise reduction), and mechanical safety. The AC-coupled front-end consists of an external module for the measurements ports. This blocks DC currents and adds a high-pass filter to limit the signals to low frequency currents. These techniques effectively isolate the instrument galvanically from the measurement object or patient interface.
Medical Research ISX-3 Impedance Analyzer is powered by an external isolated AC/DC converter which provides 12 V DC, with a software controllable electromechanical switch-off for DC input lines. Stand-alone battery operation is also possible.
